Acne is a disease which is inherited. It is triggered by
hormones, puberty, and stress.
There are many myths about acne. For example, greasy foods
and chocolate may cause obesity, but not acne. Also, acne
is not caused by dirt (the pigment in blackheads is melanin),
and excessive washing is unnecessary and actually interferes
with most treatment programs. At a microscopic level, dead
cells plug the opening of the oil gland and increased oil
secretion plays a role dilating the plug. There is a normal
bacteria on the skin that plays a further role in creating
an inflammatory (red) reaction. It is not an infection.
"Physician strength" glycolic acids, derived from sugar
cane, are the most effective way of shrinking the pores,
unplugging the oil gland, and decreasing oil production.
They act by exfoliating in a natural manner, thus unblocking
pores, preventing acne, smoothing and toning the skin. In
addition, glycolic acids stimulate collagen to smooth out
wrinkles and scars. If brown spots are present on the skin,
glycolic acid with bleaching gel is appropriate as an adjunctive
therapy.
